Greenbelt was settled in 1937 as a public cooperative community ("an experiment in American socialism") in the New Deal Era. Today's Greenbelt reaches beyond the original co-op, and now includes several communities including Chelsea Wood, Hunting Ridge, Glen Ora, and Greenbriar. BW Parkway (I-295) and the Washington Beltway (I-495) make for easy access to major commuting routes between Greenbelt and D.C. or Baltimore. The flagship campus of University of Maryland College Park is nearby and NASA Goddard is located in Greenbelt.
