Crofton, Maryland is one of the “100 Best Places to Live” according to CNN/Money Magazine. Known for having a laid-back atmosphere and a low-key profile, Crofton, MD homes are situated in close proximity to excellent schools and amenities.
The history of the community began in 1963 when a company called Crawford Corporation accumulated over 1600 acres of land and soon announced that it was planning to develop a town. In the fall of 1964, their plans were completed and Crofton was officially founded. One of its attractions then, was its community golf course, which would later become the Crofton Country Club.
The community’s name was borne out of the developers’ desire to come up with something that “sounds well and implies that this is a pleasant place to live.” Eventually, they decided to name it after a small township in Cumberland County, England called Croft-town. The name was revised a little and the community soon became known as Crofton.
Life in Crofton revolves around the Crofton Parkway. Measuring at around 3.5 miles long, the Crofton Parkway is a scenic loop which encloses the original Crofton community. It is the scene of yearly parades, the home of two of its three elementary schools, the Town Hall and the Village Green. The Crofton Country Club, which has become iconic of the Crofton way of life, can also be found within the loop. Similarly, owners of Crofton MD homes go jogging, walking or biking around the loop every morning or every afternoon.
