Beltsville

Beltsville, Maryland (20705)

Beltsville is located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, less than five miles north of the University of Maryland in College Park and approximately twenty-five miles south of Baltimore.

The community is home to a busy commercial corridor along Route 1, established neighborhoods that are more affordable than most in the D.C. suburbs, and the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) campus of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Beltsville’s rich history dates back to 1649, when Richard Snowden I received an 80,000 acre land grant from Lord Baltimore of England.  The area evolved from tobacco country to an industrial area when iron ore was discovered, the location between D.C. and Baltimore made it a natural path for travel by stagecoach and then railroad.

In 1910, the Federal Government began to purchase land in the area for the Agricultural Research Service, the primary research facility of today’s U.S. Department of Agriculture

Beltsville continues to thrive in the 21st century because of its prime location on the Rt. 1 corridor, near the Washington Beltway, (I-495), the Baltimore Washington Parkway (I-295) and Interstate 95.
